First UK Edition. A nice, clean, and thoroughly authentic vintage hardcover of her novel set in WWII Burma about a tragic Chinese-English alliance. Better still, it is still wearing its original dust-jacket - which is intact and shows a rather striking front cover picture. Ms Buck grew up in China, where her parents were missionaries, and would go on to receive both the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize in Literature, both awarded during the 1930s, which must have been quite a decade for her. This particular printing - the first British edition from 1944 - was required to be produced in accordance with the (then) ""Book Production War Economy Standard"" - which makes it rather an uncommon survivor these days, especially in the dust-jacket. The book itself is in good condition, and free of ownership names or markings or any major defects. The spine is sound. There is general, light, age wear overall. Internally, the pages are clean and free of foxing (which is unusual) with just a little creasing to the bottom right corner edges of pages 21-34, otherwise excellent. Turning to the dust-jacket, we can report that it has allowed Time to age-mellow it in the kind of way that yields ""aesthetic authenticity"". so it's rubbed and worn and creased with a few short closed tears, nicks and minor loss. Overall, though, in good preservation. Offered by D B WATERS RARE BOOKS: Professional, full-time booksellers of fine, select 1st editions, established in 1998.
