Yosemite was the first area specifically set aside for preservation and public use by the US government in 1864 and became a California state park a few years later.
"The Yosemite" was written as a guidebook for the national park.
Muir is an appropriate author has he spent much of his life from 1903-1914 fighting to have Yosemite Valley ceded to the National Park Service, which finally happened in 1906.
It includes a chapter arguing against the building of the Hetch Hetchy Valley Dam, which Muir was not successful in preventing.
Some of the material is reprinted or re-written from previously published works.
