** The first novel by Stanley Victor Makower (1872-1911), the Cambridge educated son of German Jewish immigrants.
Makower dedicated his novel to French cabaret singer and star of the Moulin Rouge, Yvette Guilbert.
The Mirror of Music was part of the publisher John Lane's Keynotes Series of Novels and Short Stories, which were issued in London between 1893 and 1897.
The early titles, including ours, were designed by Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898), who provided the full aesthetic suite (front cover, title page, and key logo).
