First edition first printing, with the bow and arrow insignia on copyright page, in a later issue dust jacket (Grosset & Dunlap).
8vo, [8] 337pp, original decorated yellow cloth.
The dust jacket, with essentially the same design as the one issued with this first printing, has been neatly trimmed along upper and lower edges (to fit the shorter Bobbs-Merrill first edition) and several short were closed with archival document repair tape.
The book itself has some soiling and scuffing to cover, spine and extremities, with moderate fading to the spine.
Internally fine.
This copy has been inscribed to Harold Carew, a prominent literary editor, book reviewer, and local historian in Pasadena, best known as the literary editor of the Pasadena Star-News.
Carew lived in Pasadena, as did Derr Biggers at the time, and was active in literary and cultural circles in the late 1920s-1930s and beyond.
The inscription dated June 16, 1929 was just a few days prior to the opening of the film based on the novel.
I've included a screenshot of page 21 of the July 19, 1929 issue of the Pasadena Star-News which includes both a review?likely penned by Carew?and a large print ad for the film's screening at the Fox Strand Theatre.
