Description

Joan Samson, The Auctioneer. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1975. First edition & first printing. Publisher s brown cloth boards with white details to spine. Full numberline to 1 . Original dust jacket with beautiful Wendell Minor artwork and $7.95 price present to the front flap. . A nearly forgotten masterpiece by Samson who would only produce this one incredible novel. She died shortly after publication of brain cancer at 38 years old. A sort of borderline horror novel it depicts the arrival of an auctioneer in a small rural town which had been a close knit community. The auctioneer tears the entire town apart pitting neighbor against neighbor in an all at once Orwellian landscape. It went out of print and was largely forgotten until Grady Hendrix brought attention to it and it was republished by Valancourt books in 2018. Suntup Editions would then publish it in the fine press arena in 2020. The true first edition of this one though is a real rarity. Many listings claiming to be first editions are in reality book club editions or later printings. It s actually easier to fine the Suntup Edition than a true first edition. A truly remarkable novel, ripe for a film adaptation. . About fine book with a touch of foxing to top block in a NF jacket, not price clipped and not faded.
