With all Carteret first printing points: final word of last line of first paragraph of p. 5: ecu; final word of p. 7: a; final word of the sixth line of p. 19: pou-, etc. Engraved vignette of the gardener is correctly on p. 303 consistent with first printing copies. Steel engraved vignettes of Feodora and Pauline are on pp. 149 and 287. The later issued full page portraits printed in anticipation of another work The Women of Balzac (never published) and found bound into some copies are not present. Attractive original French bound full calf, back in six gilt double fillet paneled compartments, gilt black calf lettering pieces in the second and fourth, the rest filled in blind ornaments. Sides with gilt double fillet borders enclosing rolled tooled blind frames. Roll tooled inner gilt dentelles. Marbled edges and matching marbled endpapers. Near fine full calf with strong joints, some minor rubs and scuffs. Some foxing on the half title and first text sheet, light and occasional thereafter, complete. H10243 All Items Are Sent Insured.
