Product Description

BULLER, Sir Redvers (1839-1908).
Autograph Letter Signed, to Sir James Grierson on embossed Adjutant-General, Horse Guards, War Office stationery, dated 9 February [c.
1890-1897].
Single sheet, written on both sides, 115 x 180 mm, on embossed Adjutant-General, Horse Guards, War Office, S.
W.
stationery.
Folded as sent with light creasing from folding and minor handling wear, small stain to the second side, otherwise in very good condition.
Written while serving as Adjutant-General to the Forces, Buller discusses the prospects of military service in Egypt.
He explains that "there is nothing going on in Egypt more than usual" and that no officers are proceeding there "except Evelyn Wood's gallant army".
Nevertheless, he reassures the recipient that he has asked the Military Secretary to "write your name in case of accidents", whilst cautioning that this will probably involve waiting before an opportunity arises.
Buller's reference to General Sir Evelyn Wood places the correspondence within the context of Britain's continuing military commitments in Egypt during the 1890s, when Egypt remained under British occupation following the 1882 campaign.
Signed boldly by Sir Redvers Buller, later Commander-in-Chief in South Africa during the opening stages of the Second Boer War and one of the most prominent British generals of the Victorian period.
A contemporary pencil annotation identifies the recipient as Sir James Grierson.
