A lovely set in the publisher's original binding of this German botanist's observations on the indigenous peoples of Brazil in the early 19th century, with a dictionary of the languages of the Tupis. In addition to the series title, the two volumes also have individual titles. Volume I: Zur Ethnoraphie Amerika's zumal Brasiliens (with a map ""Die Verbreitung der Tupis und die Sprachgruppen' [The Migration of the Tupis and Their Language Groups]). Volume II: Wörtersammlung Brasilianischer Sprachen. Glossaria linguarum Brasiliensium. Glossarios de diversas lingoas e dialectos, que fallao os Indios no imperio do Brazil. Martius (1794?1868) spent 1817 to 1820 on an expedition to Brazil, a trip that gave shape to the rest of his professional life. He published an illustrated account of his travels, an important three volume work on palms, and in 1840, he embarked on a flora of Brazil, which would be completed by others in the 20th century. This ethnography, published in the last year of his life, is one of his less common books. The text of the first volume is in German; the introductory material in volume two is in Portuguese. The second volume is the second edition of a stand-alone book first published in 1863. It's a curious collection of dictionaries, including a Brazilian Portuguese-German dictionary and several word lists in Latin with indigenous language equivalents. A very good to near fine copy in the original half-cloth and decorated-paper binding. Inner hinge paper tender, mild foxing, but generally a very nice set. Map near fine with a short marginal tear.
