When Mountbatten was asked by the Prime Minister in 1946 to take on the role of Viceroy of India and manage the transfer of Power from Britain to India along with the partition of India and Pakistan, he asked Alan Campbell-Johnson (1913-1998) to come along as his senior aide and press attache. Campbell-Johnson had previously served under Mountbatten in the RAF. Thus, Campbell-Johnson had a first-hand view of one of the most important political happenings of the day.
