Making his career as an illustrator, painter, sculptor, and writer, Frederic Remington (1861-1909) wove tales of adventure into the historic and rugged landscape of the American West in Crooked Tails. The book was influenced by his various stays amongst United States soldiers and cowboys, where Remington observed interactions with surrounding Native American tribes, skirmishes, and daily camp duties. Period previous owner's ink signature to the front flyleaf, with the bookplate of auctioneer and bibliophile Arthur Swann to the front pastedown. Much of the ""unfindable"" dust jacket is present and has been laid down on an acid-free backing sheet. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box. Provenance: from the Publishers' Bookbindings collection of Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin.
