"Fire at Sea- The Story of the Morro Castle" by Thomas Gallagher.
Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: "On a stormy September night twenty-five years ago, the luxury liner Morro Castle, was plunging through heavy seas on its return voyage to New York from Havana.
It was shortly after two o'clock in the morning and the ship was just a few miles off the New Jersey shore.
Most passengers were sleeping; some were finishing up a game of cards; others were enjoying their nightcaps before retiring.
Suddenly, spreading with tragic speed, sheets of flame engulfed the entire superstructure and within an hour hundreds were dead or floundering in the water following mass abandonment of the doomed ship.
There are eight pages of b&w photos at page 120.
This was not just an accident; disputes among crew and captain were behind this tragedy, a sad read considering all the people lost at sea.
