Product Description

First edition of this tale of an elephant who finds his way to Oz, the first post-Baum Oz book to fully credit Plumly as the author. Ruth Plumly Thompson assumed the mantle of Royal Historian of Oz in 1920, though her name did not appear on an Oz title page until 1922's KABUMPO IN OZ. KABUMPO introduces the elephant who would become "the popular favorite of all of Thompson's [Oz] characters" (Bienvenue, 95), and features elements inspired by Baum's PATCHWORK GIRL and RINKITINK. This is a particularly nice copy of the continuation of the beloved series. 9'' x 6.5''. Original blue cloth boards with large color pictorial onlay. Yellow edges. Black-and-white pictorial endpapers of Kabumpo the elephant, Ruggedo the gnome king, and the Wooden Doll. Color pictorial frontispiece with 11 color plates and various black and white illustrations; earliest printing with Princess Dorothy on page 299 (Bienvenue, 103). 300 pages. Binding slightly shaken with mild edgewear, a bit of of rubbing to onlay. Leaves with occasional shallow corner creases. Bright.
