Rather, it is a profile of his personality and a gathering of episodes and anecdotes emphasizing his unique business philosophy and his personal-touch way of running a great airline. To do a book was the inspiration of a group of the company’s directors. They felt that the Patterson blueprint should be preserved for younger and future generations of the burgeoning United family. “Pat” Patterson didn’t think a book was necessary to perpetuate his ideas or point up his achievements. He has always felt that United’s people would be monument enough. “If you have the right people behind you, you’re bound to look good,” is his creed. But he consented to talk about how he found these right people out along the airline, how their ideas rubbed off on him, and how he rubbed them off on others. All his life he has been a veritable incubator of ideas and a do-it-now implementer of them. In this book I have tried to capture the spirit and the personality of this unique airways empire builder. Part of this effort is in text about him; some more of it is in brief and pithy quotations from his talks and from interviews with him. I make no claim to being objective and offer no apology for being biased. Like everyone else I know who has felt the Patterson touch for the past three decades, I am an unabashed Patterson buff.
