Taylor was the grandson of the third president of the LDS church, John Taylor. He attended Brigham Young University, and was the editor of the student newspaper. His writing resulted in six temporary suspensions, and he ultimately dropped out and followed his future wife to her native California, where the couple settled. Taylor primarily wrote LDS history and biography, but several of his fiction works were adapted into films, including ""The Man With My Face"" and ""The Absent Minded Professor.""
