Distinguished obsteitrician and gynaecologist, Dame Louise McIlroy served as surgeon at a Royal Army Mdeical Corps hospital in Constantinople during the First World War.
Among many other achievements, she was also the first woman to be awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Glasgow.
