Full contemporary vellum. Publisher's red edges. Some mottled discoloration to vellum covers, particulaly on the spines, with rubbing to corners. Titles handwritten in ink to top of spines. Red and black ink to title pages. Printed marginalia. Armorial bookplate to front pastedowns. Previous owner's tidy and faded signature in ink to top of front covers and to front free endpapers. Spine and hinges tight. Pages are clear and supple. Volume I: Scuffing to vellum fore-edge. Touch of worming at front hinge. Light moisture damage and some tanning to preliminary pages; tideline to fore-edge margin throughout. Volume II: Ratty edges and a couple wrinkles to front free endpaper and half title. Occasional bent corner. The coat of arms appears to belong to the German Gmelin family, a prominent lineage of academics from Württemberg. The Gmelin family has a history associated with the city of Tübingen and prominent figures like botanist Johann Georg Gmelin.
