Liveright was a committed social activist appointed by Pinchot as Pennsylvania's Secretary of Welfare from 1931-1935, the years he was in office as governor (several decades after his time as Forest Service Chief) and just proceeding the publication of this book.

Pinchot was a passionate angler his whole life and this book share his experiences in twenty-three essays that range from Pennsylvania to the South Seas, described on the jacket as "ideal armchair entertainment for every man or woman who loves the outdoors.
