Description

Size: Frame 32 x 36 cm, print inside mount window 11 x 13.5 cm Condition: Print in excellent condition, mount and frame as new. This is a good example of the work of Robert Sargent Austin RA PPRWS PPRE (1895 – 1973), a noted artist, illustrator, engraver and currency designer and widely considered to be one of Britain's leading mid-twentieth century printmakers. Like most of his work of this period, the print is from a copper plate etching and engraving and shows the remarkable variety of depth and tone Austin was able to achieve. His initials are engraved in the plate but we do not know if the print is otherwise signed as it is mounted to the image and we have not taken it out of the frame. Often Austin annotated his prints in pencil on the lower margins of the paper. On the back of the frame is the label for The Artmonger gallery, Burnham Market, Norfolk. Austin lived near Burnham Market from 1936 until his death. The label dates the print 1924, but the fourth and final state, which this is, was completed in 1925.
