First editions. The complete set of Montgomery’s journals. Lucy Maud Montgomery OBE (1874 – 1942), published as L. M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author best known for a collection of novels, essays, short stories, and poetry beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables. She published 20 novels as well as 530 short stories, 500 poems, and 30 essays. Anne of Green Gables was an immediate success; the title character, orphan Anne Shirley, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. Most of the novels were set in Prince Edward Island, and those locations within Canada's smallest province became a literary landmark and popular tourist site – namely Green Gables farm, the genesis of Prince Edward Island National Park. She was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1935. Montgomery's work, diaries, and letters have been read and studied by scholars and readers worldwide. In terms of sales, both in her lifetime and since, Montgomery was the most successful Canadian author of all time. Volume I, 424 pages, is in near-fine condition. The only very minor fault is a slight darkening of the top of the pages. It is only noticeable because the tops of three of the other volumes are not darkened. The dust jacket is also fine, ignoring two very small (6mm and 2mm) smudges on the back of the jacket. Volume II, 443 pages, is in near-fine condition due to the same darkening of the top of the pages as volume I. The dust jacket is in fine condition. Volume III, 443 pages, is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket. Volume IV, 439 pages, is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket, that does have a price sticker on the back of the dust jacket. Volume V, 410 pages, is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket. All volumes are very well illustrated, and all dust jackets are in protective mylar wraps. The books are very well produced, typical of the Oxford University Press. A spectacular set of books. These 5 volumes will require additional postage.
