Product Description

First edition.

In 1937, the Scottish writer, Neil Gunn, gave up his job in the civil service, sold his house in Inverness, and bought a boat.
With his wife and his brother John, he set off on a three-month voyage around Inner Hebrides.
The boat had outlived its first youth, and its engine was somewhat cranky; she went tolerably under sail.
These are not high recommendations, but for Gunn, and at times his fellow voyagers, the vessel was an argosy of freedom, of adventure and misadventure.
Gunn was by nature poetic, uplifted or cast down by changing skies, seascapes, and shores.
His descriptions of those things, including their moods, are remarkably evocative.
The book is bound in the original pinkish cloth covered boards with light blue titling on the spine.
The case of the book is in very good condition with some soiling on the top edge of the boards and a light water stain on the top and bottom 1" of the spine, and down the rest rear half of the rest of the spine.
The spine ends are lightly bumped.
The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the fore edge of the text block and the outline of a tape stain on the top corner of the front and rear free endpapers.
A name and date has been written on the front free endpaper.
The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and a little staining.
Small pieces are missing from the rear corners and a slightly larger piece is missing near the spine corner of the top rear edge.
The spine ends are bumped and nicked with small tears at the top of the spine.
There is a tear of about 1/2" on the top front edge and the top front spine corner with some adjoining creasing between the tears.
These tears together with a few other small tears and a large tear of about 4 1/2" on the rear fore edge have been repaired on the reverse with document repair tape.
