Description

Please find on offer here a remarkably well-preserved copy of: The Genius and Character of Burns, by Professor Wilson (at the time, at the University of Edinburgh). This small hard cover book (5 x 7 ½ inches, 222 pages plus 2 pages of publisher s adverts) was published by Wiley & Putnam of New York, dated 1845. Our author has dived right into the subject matter without recourse to a Table of Contents so you will have to as well. He is, as can be readily seen from the opening lines, an unabashed enthusiast for the work of the poet (please see the photo of the 1st page of text). The book is bound in marbled-paper boards with a quarter spine and corners in dark leather and gilt titles and decorations on the spine. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The leather is rubbed, especially at the corners and there is a ½ inch split at the bottom of the front gutter. The marbled boards are also edge worn but not too badly (please be sure to see the photos). Most surprisingly, considering its age, the book is unmarked and the interior pages free of toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound although the front board is a bit sprung. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
