Description

One of 325 copies, octavo size, 69 pp., signed by Rhys Davies. Vivian Rees Davies (1901-1978), known as Rhys Davies, was ""one of the most prolific Welsh prose writers of the 20th century.[writing] approximately one hundred short stories, as well as twenty novels, three novellas, two books about Wales and an autobiography"" (n.b., quote from Wiki). This collection of four of Davies' short stories are embellished with four wood engravings by Agnes Miller Parker (1895-1980), a celebrated painter and wood-engraver, known for collaborations with several fine letterpress studios at the height of her career. Her distinctive modernist style is associated with the cubist movement, and she was at one time a member of the Chiswick group. Parker illustrated nearly fifty books, exhibited prints with the English Wood Engraving Society, 1926-31, with the Society of Wood Engravers until 1956, and was elected an associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1939. Of her illustrations for this work, the author of the bibliography stated ""Agnes Miller Parker introduces a new standard of delicacy into modern wood-engraving"", and truer works were never spoken. Her style is distinctive for its fine cross-hatching and stippled dots, which give subtle tones to her work. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter bound in tan morocco with patterned cloth boards, gilt lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, cockerel device on title page, signed by Rhys Davies on the Contents page, the four wood engravings presented as large chapter headpieces; Golden Cockerel type on Batchelor paper, large octavo size (9 5/8"" by 6 3/8""), pagination: [i-iv] 1-[64] [1, colophon], limited edition of 325 copies, this no. 199. ___CONDITION: Near fine, the leather shelfback smooth and supple, the boards clean, straight corners with minimal rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some variation to the shading of the leather shelfback, very minor edgwear near the corners, else fine. ___CITATION: Chanticleer, no. 87. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
