GARTH WILLIAMS, (AMERICAN 1912-1996) FRAMED ORIGINAL PRELIMINARY COVER DRAWING FOR CARROT NOSE, 21†X 17.5†Superb original cover drawing rendered in ink by Garth Williams. The piece is a preliminary cover drawing for the book “Carrot Noseâ€�. SIGNED by Garth Williams lower left in full signature“Garth Williamsâ€�, the drawing depicts the deer, who later in the final rendition is shown as swimming through the river with Carrot Nose holding onto the antlers (if you look carefully in this drawing the river water is behind the deer and his head is half submerged). In the drawing offered here, Garth Williams draws the deer in exquisite detail. Few preliminaries we have handled are ever drawn in pen, with this piece being one of the largest. The art is 10.25†x 13.5†(by sight), and is presented matted framed and glazed to a completed size of 21†x 17.5†. The black frame has a delicate silver detail which showcases the art and makes it pop! Framed using all archival materials and UV glass. A stunning piece, with slight soft creases to the upper left corner. PROVENANCE: The art was purchased from an auction house , who in turn acquired these pieces direct from the estate of Garth Williams. Each piece is an original and sold directly from his estate. A copy of the original invoice will be included with each piece, and will provide both provenance and authenticity for the art. **Garth Williams was a prominent illustrator of several of the most prominent children’s books including Stuart Little (1945), Charolette’s Web (1952), The Cricket In Times Square, and The Rescuers (1959). Many of his original illustrations from these book have sold attaining high premiums, including his original illustration of the dust jacket for Charolette’s Web which realized $155,000 at auction in 2010, and between $10,000 and $45,000 for original artwork of the interior pages. Other notable auction pricing of Williams original illustrations include sales of the original artwork for the interior pages of Stuart Little which also averaged in the $15,000 range per piece.
