Description

HOWARD PYLE S BOOK OF THE AMERICAN SPIRIT 1923 FIRST EDITION 200+ ILLUSTRATIONS. If you enjoy the work of the Artist/Illustrator Howard Pyle, you will probably want to add this book to your collection. I won t go into too much detail about him because, here again, if you like his work, you probably already know a good deal about him. Wikipedia reports: Howard Pyle (March 5, 1853 November 9, 1911) was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people. He was a native of Wilmington, Delaware and he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. I am very pleased to be able to offer a very nice copy of his work: Howard Pyle s Book of the American Spirit. This large hard cover book (9 ¼ x 12 ¼ inches, 348 pages) was published by Harper & Brothers of New York, dated 1923 and the First Edition with the same date on title & copyright pages. In this case, this is a reprint, with the Harper s code L-X signifying that it was printed in November 1923, well after the First Printing which was coded B-X standing for February, 1923. The book is bound in beige boards with a black cloth quarter spine which once had gilt titles on the spine. There is a paste-down color image and burgundy titles on the cover. Please see the photos of the Table of Contents and of some of the pages of the List of Illustrations. There are over 200 illustrations by Pyle in the book, 19 of which are full-color and some, full-page plates. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are a bit dust-dulled and have a white spot on the upper edge and a tiny chip out of the paste-down plate. There is also a light scratch across the paste-down plates. As mentioned, the gilt titles on the spine are just barely discernible. Inside, things are very much better. The book is unmarked and the pages and plates throughout are clean and bright. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. There is a New York Bookdealers label on the rear endpaper (Brentano s). This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
