Octavo, 520pp.
, illustrated, plus Index.
Folding map and frontispiece, plus seven inserted plates, one of which is folding (complete as issued).
A very good copy in contemporary 3/4 calf and marbled boards.
Boards rubbed, outer joints thinly and partially cracked, but holding, with possibly an old attempt at a repair.
Spine gilt dulled.
Despite these blemishes to the binding, an internally very nice example, clean and sound, with only the faintest whisper of occasional foxing.
More evident foxing and a marginal tidemark to the folding map, and two marginal tears to the frontispiece at the gutter.
First British edition (and the second overall printing) of this foundational dual-classic of travel literature and botany in the American South.
Bartram wrote florid (and likely embellished) descriptions of Native American tribes in the southeast, and is credited as the discoverer of several plant and animal species described herein.
His prose was held in high regard--even cited as an influence--by the English Romantic poets, as well as some early American writers, such as Emerson.
