Description

SHADOW LINE by Joseph Conrad, published in 1917 in London by J. M. Dent & Sons. First edition with the words ""First Issue of this Edition March 1917"" printed on the copyright page. Publisher's light green cloth, black-stamped front board & spine, gilt-lettered spine with Aldine House device on front cover. Spine lightly faded and rubbed, corners lightly bumped, previous owner's initials. No markings internally. Slightly skewed. Hinges sound, textblock tight. Near fine. Duodecimo, 227pp + 18pp publisher's catalogue. A very nice copy. The ""shadow line"" is that dim boundary that divides youth from maturity. How a young first mate, who unexpectedly finds himself in command of a sailing vessel, leaves his carefree youth behind forever in the agonizing responsibility of a twenty-one day voyage from Bankok [sic] to Singapore. His ship is becalmed, the whole crew stricken with fever and no quinine in the medicine chest!
