In 1849, like many others, preacher William Taylor came to California as part of the widespread migration westward. While his book does include information on gold mining, it primarily focuses on the author’s missionary experiences. Kurutz calls Taylor “a prolific and entertaining writer”, and while the contents of Taylor’s work are important, the full-page engravings make this work even more desirable – many of which are some of the earliest views of San Francisco.
