Hugh Thomson – An A.L.S. to William Cosmo Monkhouse This is a charming, undated, A.L.S. from the famous Northern Irish illustrator to the noted poet, and art critic, William Cosmo Monkhouse. The letter commences with a short limerick referencing Monkhouse’s “rhymes sent, so witty & pat” and continues by referring to his own skill as an illustrator that “inspired illustrations may flow from the draughtsmans Fountain pen”, presumably a reference to his intention to illustrate the poems sent to him by Monkhouse. In the event, Thomson did not illustrate the poems and the limericks were published, later, as “Nonsense Rhymes” but illustrated by Gilbert Chesterton. The letter goes on to state how he enjoyed his time at the National Gallery with Monkhouse and ends by asking him to give his “best respects to Mrs Monkhouse & the young ladies” (Monkhouse had 6 daughters). A bifolium In very good condition.
