Illustrated throughout with in-text decorations and full-page illustrations by famed Western artist Frederic Remington. ""The buffalo is gone, and of all his millions nothing is left but bones,"" Parkman wrote in his preface to this edition, continuing ""if this book can help to keep the memory of the Wild West alive, it will have done its part. It has found a powerful helper in the pencil of Mr. Remington, whose pictures are as full of truth as of spirit, for they are the work of one who knew the prairies and the mountains before irresistible commonplace had subdued them."" Boston, 16 September, 1892. The corners are slightly bumped, with slight wear to said corners and edges, spine ends expertly repaired, minimal gilt loss on spine but still bright, virtually no gilt or color loss on cover, and still very bright and fresh, slight darkening to top and bottom cover edges, with slight wear and soiling to back cover. The top edge gilt is unusually bright and clean for this edition. There is light browning to the edges of the endsheets, but text and illustrations are bright and clean. The dj spine is missing, the front and back dj panels have been glued onto a blank for preservation. See photos.
