""Forum and Century"" was an American magazine on politics, war, and culture published in New York from 1930-1940. Included in the November issue is an article titled ""CALIFORNIA'S GRAPES OF WRATH"" with illustrations: ""Californians are wrathy over 'The Grapes of Wrath,' John Steinbeck's best-selling novel of migrant agricultural workers. Though the book is fiction, many readers accept it as fact. By implication, it brands California farmers with unbelievable cruelty in their dealings with refugees from the 'dust bowl.'"" The article was published the same year (1939) as the first printing of the book.
