Description

Size: Mount 52 x 65 cm, print image 41.5 x 53.5 cm This print by Stan Dobbin is entitled ""Destruction of Job's Sons"""", signed by the artist lower right and annotated ""unique print"". The subject matter is from the Old Testament of the Bible. The Book of Job, Chapter 1 verse 19, reads ""And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee."" Job remains devout through all his tribulations. William Blake produced a depiction of this scene also in his Illustrations of the Book of Job. Stanley Dobbin (1929-2021) was born in Birmingham but moved to Devon and later to Manchester where he worked as a printmaker, painter and teacher of art. His prints are mostly woodcuts but also some other types such as this screenprint, and are heavily influenced by the German Expressionists.
