The subject matter is from the Old Testament of the Bible. The Book of Job, Chapter 1 verse 19, reads ""And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee."" Job remains devout through all his tribulations. William Blake produced a depiction of this scene also in his Illustrations of the Book of Job. Stanley Dobbin (1929-2021) was born in Birmingham but moved to Devon and later to Manchester where he worked as a printmaker, painter and teacher of art. His prints are mostly woodcuts but also some other types such as this screenprint, and are heavily influenced by the German Expressionists.
