Treacle Terrace, by Pearl Binder, pub. Dennis Dobson 1974, First Edition. Square quarto, laminate colour illustrated boards, slight wear at corners otherwise about fine. 38 pp. SIGNED by the author, Pearl Binder as 'Polly' as she was known to friends and family. The book is signed to 'Edna' i.e. Edna Healey, wife of the Labour politician Dennis Healey. Binder was instrumental in pushing Edna Healey to become a writer, relatively late in life. The Title page describes the book “for children and their parents with pictures and a moral” Her style here is a complete departure from her earlier work, reflecting instead a more 'naive' graphic style so popular in the 1970’s.The story carries an overt political message as four sets of neighbours battle to save their homes from unscrupulous developers. A black family feature as one of the four beleaguered families and here Binder, who was a committed activist, presents a progressive picture of London society as intergenerational and multi racial somewhat ahead of her time.
