Each of the following actors has signed the front free endpaper: Richardson, Ashcroft, James Donald, Gillian Lind, Ann Wilton, Madge Compton, Donald Sinden, and Pauline Jameson.
Gillian Howell (who played Marian Almond) and director Gielgud did not sign this copy.
The play, based on Henry James' novel "Washington Square," was highly successful on both sides of the Atlantic; quite fitting, as James himself lived a storied life both in New York (in Washington Square, in fact), and in England.
"The Heiress" was also adapted in the same year (1949) into an eponymous hollywood film also starring Richardson, directed by William Wyler.
A wonderful example; we haven't traced any cast-signed copies (from any production) in recent commerce or auction records.
