Description

Before he was Vice President of the United States and before he killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel, Aaron Burr was a highly respected U. S. Senator from New York during the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Congresses (1791-1797). During that time, he had access to the First Bank of the United States, which was chartered by Congress in 1791. Offered here is a check for $73.00, signed by Aaron Burr, dated the 9th of August 1796, and made payable to J.V.D. Jacobson. A notation on the bottom of the check indicates that the check was in payment of a $73 debt. The $73 is equivalent to more than $1700 in 2024; so the debt was not inconsequential. Little is known about Jacobson other than that he was a resident of Richmond County (Staten Island), which, coincidentally, is where Burr died. Size: 3 1/2 Inches By 6 1/2 Inches
