Product Description

A lovely example of a signed presentation copy of this first edition volume of poems, with a signed letter from the author, John Howard Russell.
The first edition of this vanishingly scarce work, the only published volume of poetry from the author.
With the inscription 'to Mrs.
Herbert Smith from the author' to the front free endpaper, with an undated signed letter from the author to Mrs.
Smith loosely inserted, thanking the recipient for 'allowing me to use your piano, whilst I was deprived of one during the last six months of my army service [.
] as the first few volumes of my poems have just arrived, I am sending you a copy as a token of my appreciation'.
In the dedication, the author identifies himself as an Englishman doing his army service in New York.
A Number of the poems in this collection refer to the war, with titles including 'Thoughts on a Dead Child', 'To England - From New York' and 'Rations!'.
In the publisher's original cloth binding.
A touch of fading to outwards, otherwise externally excellent.
Inscription to front free endpaper.
Internally, firmly bound.
Pages bright, with light spotting to first and last few leaves.
Signed letter loosely inserted.
