Description

Heavy elephant folio, unpaginated, no printing history, possibly 1st thus. Extended title: Egypt Delineated, in a Series of Engravings, Exhibiting the Scenery, Antiquities, Architecture, Hieroglyphics, Costume, Inhabitants, Animals, &c., of that country. Half calf leather over marbled boards, hubbed spine with gilt titles and decorations, calfskin title plate on front cover with title and decorations also stamped in gilt. Marbled endpapers. With 110 Engraved Plates. The engravings are accompanied by descriptions and explanations in French and English selected from Denon's original French work in 1802, detailing Napoleon's famed expedition to Egypt. The plates and text constitute a comprehensive introduction to the expedition, wherein Napoleon's inclusion of scientists, artists, and men of letters in various fields also accomplished the first modern scientific exploration of Egypt's past and present, and also inaugurating the age of Western world-historical exploration. Some rubbing and wear to cover spine hubs and ends, corners and edges, slight gilt loss to covers, with gilt also dulled on top, and marginal interior foxing and spotting, generally not affecting the plates. The plates themselves have slight offsetting, mostly confined to the cover sheets, most of which are fortunately present. Overall a very solid copy of this rare artifact. This is a very large and heavy volume, and will require additional shipping.
