CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The Thirty-ninth Illinois Infantry, organized in October 1861, named themselves the Yates Phalanx as an honor to the then Illinois Governor, Richard Yates.
The Thirty-ninth was one of the few Illinois Regiments to fight primarily in the Eastern theatre.
Its engagements included the Battle of Winchester; Siege of Fort Wagner; Battle of Drewry's Bluff; Siege of Petersburg; & Appomattox Campaign REFERENCE: DORN 185; NEVINS pg 69: "A good study, based one the accounts of several soldiers, and not too encumbered by dramatics"
