SIGNED BY PAUL DUDLEY WHITE TO ALFRED R.
HENDERSON: "To a fellow Oslerian/ Alfred R.
Henderson/ my warm regards and/ best wishes/ Paul Dudley White/ June 28, 1971" (see photos).
Alfred R.
Henderson and John P.
McGovern were the co-founders of the American Osler Society in 1970.
McGovern was the first Secretary, while Henderson was the Treasurer-Historian.
Paul Dudley White and Alfred R.
Henderson were "Charter Members" of the American Osler Society.
In his article "The Formative Years of the American Osler Society", Charles Roland tells the story of Henderson and McGovern, and writes of his own involvement in recruiting Charter Members for the American Osler Society: "The officers and the members of the first Board were invited by telephone; no letters.
Charter Members were largely invited by letter.
For example, I invited Earle Scarlett, Earl Nation, Bill Gibson, Ray Pruitt, Tom Keys, R.
Palmer Howard, and Edward H.
Bensley.
" Presumably someone sent a letter to Paul Dudley White, inviting him to be a Charter Member.
Paul Dudley White would have been an obvious choice to be a Charter Member, if only because of the "Introduction" he provided to the Norton edition (1963) of William Osler's Aequanimitas.
In the very first sentence of this Introduction, White writes of Osler "one of my medical heroes" (p.
9).
I do not see anything about the American Osler Society in either Paul Dudley White's autobiography, the book offered here, or in Oglesby Paul's biography of Paul Dudley White, Take Heart: The Life and Prescription for Living of Dr.
Paul Dudley White.
NOTE about inscribed copies of this book: Paul Dudley White often inscribed a bookplate to be pasted into this book, but he has inscribed on the front flyleaf of this copy.
