Their military superiors try to thwart the dueling Hussars, but gentlemanly pride prevails and they do fight, although one soldier seems surprised when his sword draws blood and he had to attend to his foe's wound. It is a lighter novel than many of Conrad's maritime works, and has a suitably Hollywood ending. The story is complimented by the full-page color illustrations, showing the men in battlefields both outdoors and by the lady ""reclining on a couch"".** Illustrator Dan Sayre Groesbeck (1878-1950) created cinematic concept art for movies, as well as illustrating numerous books. He became a major source of inspiration for legendary filmmaker, Cecil B. DeMille, who came to rely on his artwork to convey visual concepts to costume and set designers.** Supino A13.9.0.
