"Jean visited Paul Rosenfeld in August of 1928 at York Beach.
There he began a novel that he first called 'Istil' and later 'York Beach'.
It was to be his 'novel of American life.
' Nathan Antrum, the protagonist, is a writer who has realized that his life consists of phases of apparent fulfillment and nonfulfillment, but both are necessary to push him toward something superior to life on earth.
Antrum was clearly based on Toomer himself, and the other major character was based on Rosenfeld.
