An in-depth analysis of New Guinea published nine years after its annexation in 1883. James Park Thomson was an experienced explorer and land surveyor who worked in Fiji, New South Wales and Queensland. In this work he drew on the notes of Sir William MacGregor, administrator of British New Guinea from 1888 to 1898, with whom he served in Fiji. The original manuscript was lost on the ill-fated ""Quetta"" in 1890 and had to be re-written before it was finally published in 1892.
