""I have been a collector of Davis' work for 25 years, and admired his unique style since my father first brought home a copy of Homer and Jethro's album 'Life Can Be Miserable'. That was about 1960, and I was 8 years old. Over the years my personal collection grew and grew. I kept hoping to find a book that covered Jack Davis' career, but I never found it. In 1984, therefore, I decided to take on the task of chronicaling Davis' work myself, confident the great majority of his works resided in my own filing cabinets. How wrong I was. In talking with dozens of collectors and art dealers, advertising directors, his contemporaries, and ultimately Davis himself, I found my work had only just begun. Two years of additional research followed, checking and cross-checking, aided by Davis along the way. I did not set out to make this book a complete listing of every illustration Jack Davis has done to date; that would require a volume the size of the Manhattan phone book. I have, however, tried to cover every major facet of Davis' career and answer some of the many questions that have been asked over the years. We happily await comments and additions from all quarters on how we can update this volume. - Hank Harrison, from the Introduction.
