Scarce, well-written history of the Southerndown Ladies Golf Club in Southern Wales.
Blessed with seaside turf "unsurpassed in the country" (say Harry Vardon and James Braid), Willie Fernie designed and constructed an incredible 18-hole course in 1904, measuring a staggering 7170 yards, when other championship courses were in the low 6,000 yards! Seven holes were more than 500 yards! Imagine the ladies, armed with hickory shafted clubs and rarely-round, rock-hard gutta percha balls, battling it out over this windswept links.
It is no wonder Southerndown was known to produce some stalwart golfers.
