Pearl Binder was a Salford born writer, illustrator and sculptor. She was also known for her work with the Pearly Kings and Queens, an organised charitable tradition of London’s working-class culture. Ladies Only, her second collaboration with entomologist George Ordish, follows the adventures of a Korean Aphrodisiac, Ginseng. Under scientific investigation, the plant suddenly becomes a powerful new drug, falling into the hands of eccentric scientists and sought after by tycoons and psychiatrists. The creation of the drug sparks a global feminist revolution, forwarded by secret society Ladies Only, who are determined to seize world power from men. The book explores themes of gender politics and power structures, the absurdities of modern society, war, ‘the cult of the occult’, human behaviour and misogyny. London: Dennis Dobson, 1972. First edition. Hardcover. 241pp. Inscribed by Pearl Binder dated ‘March 1974’. Original dark cloth with the spine lettered in silver, hot-pink jacket designed by binder is now in a protective cover with a few small marks, spine sunned, text clean. An excellent copy of a scarce novel.
