Description

First edition published by J.M Dent and Sons in 1911. This is a very good or better copy. The green cloth boards are in excellent shape with no bumps or marks. The spine is lettered in gilt along with a gilt motif. The front board is lettered in black. A first issue copy. The pages have scattered foxing in places and the front and last end papers have lighter square patches where perhaps a wrapper or insert had sat. All illustrations are present.  1500 copies of the author's first travel book were printed but around 900 were pulped, making copies in decent condition quite rare. Douglas documents his journey through southern Italy. He discusses mythology, folklore, ghosts and patron saints along with a history of the region and detailing of the landscape.
