Shimooka Renjo was a Japanese photographer, and was one of the first professional photographers in Japan.
He opened the first commercial photography studio in Yokohama, and in Japan he is widely considered the father of Japanese photography.
This volume is a detailed study of his life and work, and includes texts by Morishige Kazuo, Saito Takio, Ishiguro Keisho, Sebastian Dobson, Minami Miyuki, and Mitsui Keishi.
Presented throughout are many examples of his ink drawings, landscape paintings, albumen prints (many of which are hand colored), and ambrotypes.
