The opinion of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Practice of Barcelona states of this work: "It offers, in a well-organized and clear manner, a brief compendium of the basic concepts of Pharmacy, and because it presents this art illustrated with the lights of modern chemistry, it distinguishes it from the few writings in this field that have been published until now.
" Francisco Carbonell (1768-1837), born in Barcelona, received his doctorate in medicine at University of Huesa (1795) and taught chemistry at the College of Pharmacy (Barcelona) 1795-8.
He earned his Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Montpelier (1801), where he was friendly with Chaptal and later translated Chaptals Chimie Appliquà Aux Arts into Spanish) and was appointed Professor of Chemistry Applied to the Arts by Royal Junta in Barcelona (1803).
He lost an eye demonstrating the synthesis of water to students.
After spending the period 1808-1814 in Majorca (until Napolean invaded) he returned to Spain and was appointed Professor at the University of Barcelona.
Shortly afterward he suffered apoplexy which affected his speech.
In addition to Chaptal, Carbonell translated works by Fourcroy and Mojon into Spanish.
