A presentation copy of her seminal work to George Cyril Allen and his wife Nell. Allen was an eminent economist and fellow member of the British Academy along with Gowing, in fact she wrote his memoir for the Academy in 1982. He and his wife Nell were also friends of Gowing. Margaret Gowing became only the third person to become a member of both the British Academy and The Royal Society after Sir Karl Popper and Joseph Needham.
