Description

Near fine condition in a very good dust jacket, now protected in a removable Mylar sleeve. Blue cloth boards are clean, bright, and unfaded, with sharp gilt lettering to the spine and only a faint superficial spot and a few trivial surface rubs. Text block edges show mild age-toning but no significant foxing. Endpapers display a band of offsetting from the jacket flaps and a small penciled bookseller notation, as shown. The binding is tight, square, and entirely sound; pages are crisp, unmarked, and fresh for a 1947 Chapman & Hall first edition. The dust jacket is complete and unclipped (5s. net), showing light edge wear, small closed tears, and some foxing and faint handling marks to the rear panel—still presentable and far better than commonly seen for this title. The striking Mervyn Peake illustrations retains strong color and definition. A solid and attractive example of Waugh’s postwar novella, increasingly uncommon in collectible condition and seldom found in North American offerings.
