1948. First edition, first printing. x, 321pp. a frontispiece and many other full-page and in-text black and white illustrations by Stuart Tresilian. The Adventure Series by Enid Blyton is a series of eight children's novels. The books feature the same child characters: Philip, Jack, Dinah, and Lucy-Ann, along with several adult characters and Jack's pet parrot, Kiki. The Sea of Adventure is the fourth in the series, and sees Bill taking the foursome on a trip to a Scottish island to help them recover from measles. Amongst the islands, they stumble upon a sinister plot; Bill disappears, and the children are left alone to find out where he is, what is going on and how they will escape. The book is bound in the original light yellow cloth covered boards with blue titling and an illustration on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling from finger marks, etc., and the spine is slightly cocked. The top corners are lightly bumped and there is heavier bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with a small patch of damage on pages 160 and 161 where part of the pages had stuck together. There is an inscription dated Xmas 1948 on the front free endpaper and a thin repaired split down the spine gutter of the front endpapers. The clipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the edges are rubbed. Small pieces are missing from the corner tips and pieces of up to about 1/4" are missing from the bottom of the spine. A 1" piece is missing from down the top of the rear spine edge and a larger triangular piece of 1" is missing from around the top front spine corner. There are several tears of up to about 1" on the edges, some with surrounding creases and including the fore edges, and most of the tears have been repaired on the reverse with document repair tape.
